Japanese pieris (Pieris Japonica) also known as lily of the valley is native to Taiwan as well as to the southeasterly parts of Japan and China. This evergreen garden shrub is naturalized widely across the North American continent, South America, and Europe. The hardiness zone of Japanese pieris is 5 to 8. The shrub can reach a height of about ten feet and a width of about several feet. The evergreen shrub will form a dense thicket, which also makes it a great privacy shrub. The plant’s translucent bell-shaped white flowers bloom in early spring and they smell sweet like honey. Please know that birds like to nest in this shrub and be careful about pruning. The priceless peacock butterfly enjoys the luscious nectar from this plant and so be prepared for some vibrant visits to your cottage garden. The hummingbirds will also visit for the sweet nectar. The plant blooms early, and it will feed the pollinators like the bees who then pollinate your food garden. The plant can begin on the porch in a container before the root system overtakes that spot and you transplant direct in ground. The Japanese pieris prefers moist, well-draining soil. Once mature the plant can take a lot of sun and this will make its blooms even sweeter.  Portland Plant Paradise offers all shop customers a free consultation, and we would like to work with you such that this spectacular life-giving shrub thrives in your garden.
