St. John’s Wort (Hypericum perforatum) grows like a native across many parts of the globe, and this woodland plant has been naturalized across much of North America. The hardiness zone for St. John’s Wort is 6 to 10. The wildflowers of St. Johns grow from a perennial shrub that may reach at least several feet in height and width. The flowers typically bloom at the Summer Solstice. ‘Twas out of the blue and a bit after the Summer Solstice that St. John’s Wort first appeared to me quite like magic in my pine woodland forest garden. I am grateful and have proper reverence for this vibrant visitor. The St. John’s wildflowers bloom bright yellow like the color of the Sun, and at the height of the Sun’s direct blaze upon Mama Maya. This divine light of the Sun is an alchemy of all the colors of the rainbow acting in tandem together. Why? Well? Do we name this flower St. Johns. Because we know that Juan and Juana arrive from the sea the Mar. Del fin del mundo. De los delfines. Which is also where Marijuana comes from. The flowers of Marijuana are also golden. We revere Juan and the ability to resurrect each year here on Mama Maya. At the Solstice oh the feriados we’ve experienced. What joyous music and cuisine and dancing. Flowers everywhere. The stone fountains now a market and a sea of people all wandering. Yet, in tandem. It’s the fay that guides us under this Sun light of one. And, in that respect, the bright yellow flowers, well, they bring us all together. For that even with all the rainbow arc-colored sparkles of these fêtes. Let us tell you that it’s this magical flower’s name:  St. John’s Wort. St. Johns is what these folk-times of the fay choose to call it. Feliz feriados de San Juan. Please note that the flowers, leaves, and berries of St. John’s Wort have traditionally been celebrated by the indigenous for the plant’s many medicinal properties. If you grow St. John’s Wort, you’ll see that each Summer the fantastic golden flowers burst forth right around the time of the celebrations for St. John from late June through early July. If you have this holy plant in your garden, you’ll certainly see some heavenly visitors of the fay such as hummingbirds, butterflies, honeybees, and bumblebees. The red berries will feed a diversity of birds come Fall and even into Winter. The plant likes moist, well-draining soil and prefers as a mature plant direct Sun without much shade. At least six hours of direct daily sunlight brings out the beautiful flowers and berries.
