The self-heal herb (Prunella vulgaris) grows like a native across Europe, Asia, and North America. Self-heal, also known as heart-of-the-earth, is a perennial, herbaceous wildflower, growing from between a few inches to a few feet tall. Here at Portland Plant Paradise, we know that a gardener goes far with wild grasses and other wild groundcovers. Because while one must hem and haw over industrial lawn, mow it and cater to it, the self-heal plant does best when gone wild, and left to its own devices. The inevitable resources thus saved in a wild garden can be spent enjoying it. And sharing the bounty of this necessary native herb with the Fay. The self-heal herb first visited my magical pine woodland garden a year or so ago. In a year I’ve encouraged self-heal’s rhizome to spread from about a square foot clump to a colony that extends several feet in diameter. I laid down bark from a fallen tree directly upon the very clay ground in which a small patch of self-heal is trying to take root in my garden. I also give the petit patch of self-heal herb extra water during dry spells. And lo and behold does self-heal spread in a delightful green and low-lying patch of a few inches in height across a pretty, shady part of the northwest facing garden. Self-heal thrives in a colony, and not all the individual plants in a colony will necessarily bloom. Typically, the flowers of self-heal appear violet, but the purple majesties especially up-close display an intricately colored pattern including browns, greens, and burgundies. Once self-heal taps into garden spaces, all it needs is dappled sunshine for all those vibrant flowers, and some water during the dry seasons. In turn, the self-heal plant brings to the garden some vivacious visitors, such as sulphur butterflies, skippers, honeybees, and bumblebees. These pollinators are priceless for food production. The indigenous consider the self-heal herb to be medicinal for healthy skin, wound healing, and for all-around immunological wellness. The leaves are made into salads and stews, the flowers brewed to make teas, tinctures, and other tonics, and the stems are used in salves, ointments, and poultices. The self-heal plant is at once nourishing and antioxidant, at the same time that it deftly detoxifies. This offer is $50 for a 6 inch organic rooted seedling. Free shipping.
