Nipplewort (Lapsana communis) is a perennial herbaceous woodland plant native to what are today called the British Isles, Europe, Asia, and North America. The plant is naturalized across the earth plane and sometimes called common:  it’s anything but. The nipplewort hardiness zone is 4 to 8. This golden flower is as pretty as it is resilient and grows anywhere, although it tends to grow in groups near trees and shrubs. Indigenous women including mothers have used the dried flowers and leaves to make a tea that supports over-all health. The leaves and flowers of the plant are calming and antiseptic. The cheerful, social plant likes afternoon sun and thrives southeast facing with dappled shade. Sometimes scouts of a flower patch will send out runners from the shared rhizomes and set up neighboring clusters of cousinly beauties. The flowers bloom starting late Spring and can last all the way through Winter depending upon the climate of that particular year, including precipitation, and how long it may go below freezing. Moist, well-draining soil is optimal all the year round; yet, these delicate little garden flower fairies learn to tap into the root systems of the surrounding ecosystem and can thereby get through periods of drought. The flowers grow about a foot tall and spread as they’re want to do and as they’re integrated into the surrounding ecosystem. This is a gentle and cordial beauty to invite into a garden, and the plant is not an invasive influence. Sometimes the plant may die back in Winter, but it will return in Spring and perennially if it likes your garden. If this plant decides to take root, it will do so. Butterflies and bees will visit you to partake of the delicacy that also can be a very practical, year- round nourishment. Although it’s those hidden beauties that get ignored, they’re also the ones that reveal themselves to be surprisingly stunning when you take the time to get a good look at them. At Portland Plant Paradise, please remember that we offer a free consult with each and every shop purchase, and we cannot wait to speak with you about how to get this heretofore wallflower into your life.
