California coffeeberry (Frangula californica) is native to the North American continent. The California coffeeberry hardiness zone is 7 to 10. The coffeeberry is a perennial, evergreen woodland shrub that can grow up to 15 feet in height and width. The plant will often die back during Winter and reappear with renewed vigor during Spring. The plant has been used medicinally by indigenous peoples for generations, and the berries can be eaten fresh, dried, and made into jam. The coffeeberry seeds can also be ground and made into a kind of coffee. The coffeeberry seeds do contain some caffeine although less than in Coffea arabica. In the garden, this woodland shrub can serve as a wonderful privacy hedge at the same time that it feeds wildlife. I am grateful the Fay planted the coffeeberry in my garden. The coffeeberry attracts may welcome visitors, such as quails, thrashers, orioles, house finches, woodpeckers, orange-crowned warblers, grosbeaks, and the Lorquin’s admiral butterfly (Limenitis lorquini) among others. The plant thrives in sun as well as shade, but at least six hours daily of direct light is optimal for flowering and fruiting. The plant flowers in Spring and its berries mature from July through November, turning from green to red and then a black color when fully ripe. The shrub relishes deep watering as it establishes itself in a garden. As a mature shrub, it will require less frequent watering.
