Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) is native to Eurasia, and the tree is now naturalized across the North American continent. The hardiness zone for Scots pine is 3 to 8. The tree can reach from 80 to 100 feet in height, with an average growth rate of one to two feet per year. The tree requires six hours of direct daily sunlight for optimal growth. The Scots pine is ancient to Mama Maya, with roots going back at least before the last ice age. The tree is truly anemophilous, meaning that it is pollinated by the wind. The Scots pine in all its windswept forms is a great work of art. According to the Scottish Forestry Trust, although the Scots pine is the national tree of Scotland, there has been a sad and steep decline of the hallowed tree upon its native lands. That said the reasons to plant a Scots pine are a plenty. The Scots pine is rich in Vitamin C and medicinally can be used for improved lung function and to prevent respiratory illness and arthritis. The tree’s pine needles make an excellent medicinal tea as well as bath oil. The pine resin is antiseptic and antimicrobial, and the tree’s sap is an extreme curative as applied directly to wounds. The Scots pine provides a firm foundation to any garden, and neighboring plants will be able to tap into its deep root system. In Spring, the tree blooms in colorful clusters of red and yellow, attracting bees, butterflies, moths, dragonflies, lady bugs, and praying mantises. The terrific tree sustains the Imperial Moth (Eacles imperialis) larvae. Seed cones ripen in October, and seed is released in December, alimenting a broad ecology as Winter approaches, including the Pine Grosbeak. The tree does best in well-draining soil that is deeply watered when the earth dries out. At Portland Plant Paradise, we offer all shop customers a free consult.
