The Douglas fir tree (Pseudotsuga menziesii) is native to a diverse range of western North America from central British Columbia to central Mexico. The Douglas fir hardiness zone is 4 to 8. The Douglas fir is evergreen, and it is the tallest tree in the pine (Pinaceae) family. According to Dr. Al Carder in “Giant Trees of Western America and the World” the Douglas firs that inhabit coastal regions may grow to 400 feet in height, making it the tallest tree on the earth. The average height of an old-growth Douglas fir tree is 75 to 125 feet. The Douglas fir can live for 500 years, with the Washington State Department of Natural Resources reporting that the oldest specimens live for over 1,300 years. The Douglas fir is fundamental to wildlife ecology, and its breathtaking burgundy flowers are pollinated by the wind, bees, butterflies, moths, and birds, including songbirds, hummingbirds, and woodpeckers. The majestic Douglas fir trees grow one to two feet per year, and they can be kept in containers for a few years pending being planted in the ground. As you prune back the priceless pine needles and cones of this conifer, you will realize what it means to have true presents under a tree. The pine needles and sap make a delicious, sweet and tangy tea that is extremely rich in Vitamin C. Douglas fir sap is high in nitrogen, potassium, calcium, copper and magnesium. The tree’s pine cones can be used as fire starters, which create the purest ash that can then be used back in the garden as nature’s best fertilizer. The tree is very wild and a sapling should only be brought inside the home for limited time periods such as during Christmas to protect it from extreme cold and frost. At some point in time, the Douglas fir must rejoin the wild and be planted permanently outdoors. This offer is $75 for a 12 inch organic rooted sapling. Free shipping.
