The Norway spruce (Picea abies) is an evergreen conifer native to central, eastern, and northern Europe, and it is naturalized across the northern parts of North America. The Norway spruce hardiness zone is 2 to 8. The tree is capable of growing to at least 200 feet, with a more common range of 100 to 150 feet. The tree can live for 300 years, although most likely is that the tree will be ready to come down at about 200 years. It is a fast-growing tree, gaining in height at about two to three feet per year. The Norway spruce can be kept in containers pending being planted in the ground in the next few years. The soil should be kept moist and well drained, with dappled sunlight being best for the youngest saplings. Once the tree matures, it can take a range of temperatures and does well in full sunlight. The sunlight aids in sap and pinecone production. The tree’s pine needles and sap make a wonderful tea, high in Vitamin C and shikimic acid, which are essential nutrients in keeping the respiratory system healthy and flus at bay. This regal tree is pollinated by the wind, as well as by bees, butterflies, moths, and hummingbirds. The reproductive dance of the Norway spruce is a delightful display of nature, with the male cones standing fiery and erect near the bottom of the tree and the relatively roundish purple-green-turning-to-brown female cones up above. The male pinecones release their pollen starting in Spring, and the female cones mature into seed-bearing cones come Fall. The male pinecones turn brown as well as down during the late Summer to early Autumn months, before finally falling from the tree altogether. When the female pinecones fall thereafter, this is how the little baby saplings are formed. The roundish baby pinecones of the mama fall down and are thereby planted, protected by the surrounding earth and sometimes snow, with their little green piney heads popping up out of the ground come springtime. It is a stunning story of resurrection old as the earth plane itself. This offer is $100 for a 12 inch organic rooted sapling. Free shipping.
