Oregon grape (Berberis repens) is native to North America west of the mountain ranges. The Oregon grape’s hardiness zone is 4 to 8. The plant is classified as a shrub, and it is evergreen meaning that it keeps leaves even throughout Winter. Depending upon the temperatures and the precipitation, the plant may die back during the Winter. The Oregon grape plant will burst forth from its deep rhizome with new growth in Spring. The shrub can grow to heights of three feet, and it commonly covers a ground range of several feet. It is a wild plant that should be largely left alone. I am very grateful that an Oregon grape decided to visit my garden. The stunning yellow flowers which have a delicately sweet scent appear in the Spring, and they attract a diverse range of precious pollinators, including honeybees, bumblebees, butterflies, moths, and hummingbirds. The Oregon grape hosts the brown elfin butterfly (Callophrys augustinus), and this darling creature lays its eggs on the plant. The beautiful blue berries of the Oregon grape ripen in early Fall. The berries are favorites of jays, robins, towhees, and waxwings. The Oregon grape can grow in various light conditions, including dappled shade and direct sun. However, a good six hours of direct sunlight per day will bring the bedazzling berries to fruition. The berries are very high in vitamin C and can be made into wines and jams.
