The silver birch (Betula pendula) is native to some parts of Europe and Asia, and it has been naturalized especially across the northern parts of North America. The silver birch hardiness zone is 2 to 8. This spectacular tree will grow well on its own as well as in forest groves. Thus, please plant this tree in your roomy suburban garden or on your many acre estate. The tree self-pollinates, with male and female flowers called catkins appearing in mid spring. The silver birch will bring many a fine visitor to your home and gardens, such as honeybees; hummingbirds; moths, for example, the Lobster Moth; and butterflies, including the Camberwell Beauty, Kentish Glory, Mourning Cloak, American Lady, Silvery Blue, and Zebra Swallowtail. The silver birch can reach heights of 100 feet, although 30 to 50 feet is more typical. As the tree is deciduous and the leaves and branches of the silver birch let through some good light, the sun will shine through to support a fine nursery of flowers under this tree. The leaves turn yellow and sometimes even a dazzling orange in autumn. The silver birch is used by diverse Indigenous and other smart people for medicine, and the bark, leaves, and flowers contain anti-inflammatories, are detoxifying, and are rich in flavonoids, tannins, and vitamin C. In Celtic culture, the silver birch is associated with the Goddess Brigit, and with new beginnings, protection, and renewal.
