The red maple (Acer rubrum) is a blazing beauty for your home and garden, with its five-pointed leaves cashing out in full crimson during autumn. Although native to eastern North America, the tree is naturalized across the continent and thrives within certain of the western regions. The red maple hardiness zone is 3 to 9. The tree thrives in partial shade, and it only wants about four hours of direct sun per day for optimal fruition. What better way to decorate your home for Halloween than with some bloody red leaves scattered ’round the jack o’ lanterns? The red maple is deciduous and will spend the winter looking bare bark and beautiful in the snow and twilight. Come spring the red maple is a pollinator champion, with its flowers as early as late March providing precious nectar for honeybees, bumble bees, and birds. In fact, the wonderful Pine Warbler prefers the red maple for nesting and nourishing its young. You yourself may find the red maple to be a sweet edition to your garden spaces. Did you know that the red maple is used commercially for maple syrup production? You too can tap into this resource, quite literally. At Portland Plant Paradise, we offer all shop customers a free consult, and we’d love to speak with you about how you can grow and harvest from the red maple.
