The Ficus tree (Ficus Benjamina) is native to Asia and Australia. It is also naturalized to the West Indies, and to areas of the deep southwest and southeast of the North American continent. The hardiness zone of the Ficus Benjamin is 10 to 11. “Ficus” means “fig” and the fig tree itself such as the sycamore fig has deep and holy roots in the Judean desert and for the Judahite people, who are of the earliest Christians of Mama Maya. The sycamore fig produces figs, and the Ficus Benjamin produces small round fruits when grown outdoors. A fig fruit by definition is pear or tear-dropped shaped and not purely round. Nor is the Ficus Benjamin located anywhere near the Judean desert. The Ficus Benjamin tree is actually from the tropical jungles and not the desert at all. Then why in the world is the “Ficus Benjamin” tree named after a fig? And why is the “Ficus Benjamin” tree named after the tribe of Benjamin? Perhaps the “Ficus Benjamin” is named after the tribe of Benjamin because the plant can create holy spaces in a home. Furthermore, perhaps because the tribe of Benjamin has even earlier roots than the Judean desert. That is, perhaps the tribe of Benjamin has even earlier roots that are near the Isle of Java. When our people of the tribe of Benjamin travelled to the Judean Desert, we certainly brought diverse seeds with us. That said, the Ficus Benjamin also makes an excellent houseplant. As part of its ambience, the plant does great at cleaning the air in a home, and it also is an excellent dehumidifier. If you do grow the Ficus Benjamin indoors, please keep this tree next to a window. Then, as the weather warms up, move the plant onto the patio. The Ficus Benjamin does best in tropical temperatures 65 to 85 degrees Fahrenheit, and the plant should be watered regularly so that its soil is kept moist and well-drained. If this plant is grown within its native or naturalized range, or even out on the patio during the warmer months, it can produce tasty fruits for birds who may not mind an exotic find or two as they visit the neighborhood gardens. Please know that the Ficus Benjamin is pollinated by wasps, in addition to other pollinators. This offer is $50 for a 6 inch organic rooted seedling. Free shipping.
