English holly (Ilex aquifolium) is not just for the holidays anymore. This evergreen shrub offers your garden a gorgeous showing of lush and luminescent dark green foliage throughout the year. The garden shrub is native to the British Isles and naturalized across North America, Europe, and Asia. The English holly hardiness zone is 6 to 9. Did you know that the English holly has its own butterfly, known as the holly blue (Celastrina argiolus)? The heavenly holly blue butterfly inhabits anywhere its host plant can be found. English holly does well in containers as well as straight in the garden ground, and it can be pruned to almost any length and height. The English holly bursts forth with white, petite flower clusters, its own kind of tinsel, from late spring to early summer. The flowers have a sweet, delicate fragrance. In a truly wild garden, it’s up to God whether you get berries or not. This is because the English holly is dioecious, which means that male flowers and female flowers are on separate plants. Did you know that in Spanish “Dios” means God. Thus, for berries to form, God must do a bit of matchmaking and bring together a female holly plant with a male holly plant to pollinate her. Bees including honeybees, mason bees, and mining bees are the primary pollinators. The English holly requires a good six hours of direct sunlight per day for berries to form. Fortunate for us, a gardener may work together with God such that a holly plant produces berries.
