The whirly pine (Pinus strobus) is native to the North American continent and across parts of Eurasia. Did you know that in Latin the very word strobus means what is inherently the name “pinecone” itself? Thus “strobus” must be a pine species famous to the ancients. In Greek, the word strobus means “whirly” or having a whirly motion. Indeed, if one looks at the pinecone and sapling structures of the Pinus strobus as they develop it is most definitely a whirly kind of twisting growth. Just where will this whirling pine tree tornado, a tempest of life land next? Perhaps it will land at your local ecosystem. The hardiness zone of the whirly pine is 3 to 8. The Pinus strobus thrives in well-watered, well-draining soil and a good six hours of direct sun each day, although the saplings will not mind some dappled shade. This is a tree whose very nourishment fuels those hoping to reach the gods, and if you plant one of these trees, you will in ten years, experience a whole garden remodel. The whirly pine grows to a height of about 50 to 200 feet depending upon the ecosystem at a rate of about one to three feet a year. The whirly pine is an ancient tree that is wind pollinated. The tree blooms in Spring and the pinecones fall during the Autumn season. The smell of this pine tree in bloom is of a sweet and pungent perfume that has no equal. Its beautiful pinecones will nourish an entire garden ecosystem. Be on the lookout as the birds arrive to investigate, including the finches and the jays as they partake of the pinecones. Perhaps your garden will even be visited by nuthatches, a Red Crossbill (Loxia curvirostra) or a Caucasian Jay (Garrulus glandarius krynicki). Then, what joy as a squirrel family takes up residence at your climbing conifer condo. The sappy pinecones as well as the pine needles make a delicious, sweet tannin filled tea rich in vitamin C. This heavenly brew can also be used in beauty bath soaks. Indigenous and other smart peoples have long celebrated the tree’s life-giving properties. A cup of whirly pine tea provides a wealth of antioxidants, immune support, and vitality to the respiratory system. The pine resin may well invigorate you and make you feel young again.
