Rosalina (Rosa carolina) is a wildflower native to the North American continent, and this rose plant bush is now home to an organic cottage garden that relishes a teatime surprise attended by the most sumptuous of callers. The honeybees, bumblebees, butterflies, and hummingbirds as well as the Polyphemus moth will all pay homage to la bella Rosalina, as they pollinate the wildflower’s sweet nectar. Many birds such as blackbirds, goldfinches, robins, thrushes, and waxwings will all visit your magic rose garden for a taste of the rosehips. The hardiness zone of Rosa carolina is 3 to 9 and the plant can even survive at 10 or 11 perhaps in dappled sunlight depending upon the climate. This native rosebush of the Americas prefers moist and well-draining soil, although Rosalina can survive in a wealth of diverse habitats from sand dunes to woodlands to river stream beds to your very own organic cottage garden. A mature wild rosebush once it has tapped into the larger ecosystem can even survive through droughts as it will share water with its neighbors. The rosebush will grow to a height of about three to six feet wide and tall, and the plant will thrive with reasonable pruning. Although it depends upon the particular climate the native Rosalina typically blooms in Spring and produces luscious red rosehips in Fall. Did you know that all parts of a rose plant are edible? Just be careful not to hurt yourself on the thorns. Rose petal tea and wine are of the earth plane’s greatest delicacies. And is there any greater delight than in opening up a jar of sweet, fresh rosehip jam in Winter? Rose flowers and fruits both contain flavonoids; antioxidants; vitamins A, B, C, E, and K; calcium; magnesium; iron; and phosphorous. Rosehips have about ten times more the vitamin C than oranges.
