This white garden pansy (Viola x wittrockiana) has a rich native heritage. This gorgeous flower is the result of hybridization among Viola altaica (native to Asia), Viola lutea (native to Europe), and Viola tricolor (native from Europe to western Siberia and northwestern Iran). The garden pansy given this diverse and strong ancestry just doesn’t know when to stop blooming, and the plant is now naturalized across the earth plane. The garden pansy hardiness zone is 5 to 11. The garden pansy flowers can and will bloom all the way from spring through winter. The garden pansy prefers moist, well-drained soil and full sun to dappled shade. The garden pansy requires five to six hours of sun a day for good blooms. One seedling will reach within the season about half a foot tall and a foot wide. The flowers and leaves of the garden pansy are both edible and will add flavor and texture to soups. The dried flowers and leaves can also be used to make tea. The entire plant is rich in flavonoids, anthocyanins, and phenolic acids. The plant also contains a rich mix of tannins, saponins, alkaloids, and essential oils. Given this diverse biochemical constituency, the pansy has a wealth of antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial properties. These components support overall immune function and result in healthy hair and skin. But be prepared to share. For the butterflies, the bees, and the hummingbirds will all be attracted to visit your garden for a taste of the pansies. The pansy is named after the French and Spanish word “pensar” which means to think. The flower is associated per this nomenclature with a keen and heartful way of remembrances.
