Twinberry honeysuckle (Lonicera involucrata) also known as bearberry honeysuckle is a vine native to North America. The twinberry honeysuckle hardiness zone is 5 to 8. This lovely plant is a vine that can become a large shrub up to 15 feet in height. Hummingbirds love the gorgeous twin trumpet-shaped flowers, which appear in the colors of yellow, orange, and red depending upon growth, maturity, and reflection of the sunlight. The flowers are a crucial nectar source for butterflies and moths. Specifically, twinberry honeysuckle is host for the larva of a beautiful butterfly called the Gillett’s checkerspot (Euphydryas gillettii). Look who’s coming to dinner? Everyone, as we smell the intoxicating scent of the plant’s flowers en masse, which one by one have a soft, sweet fragrance. Flowering occurs beginning in Spring, with the berries ripening thereafter and typically by the end of July. The plant’s berries are eaten by bears; birds, such as the thrushes; and small mammals, such as racoons and squirrels. The indigenous have harvested for millennia from the twinberry honeysuckle for medicinal and culinary purposes, and the plant’s berries can be made into wine. I am very fortunate that the Fay decided to plant this vine in my wild, woodland garden. Twinberry honeysuckle prefers moist, well-drained soil in full sun or partial shade, and this ancient vine knows best how to grow toward the light in a way that will benefit the rhizome and thereby bring flowers and berries to a garden.
