Spanish bluebells (Hyacinthoides hispanica) are native to the Iberian Peninsula and northwest Africa. The totally tubular plant is naturalized across the Magic Isles, Europe, and the Americas. The hardiness zone of Spanish bluebells is 3 to 9. These violet blue angel bells are marvelous flowers of the Fay. The majestic beauties have a vast and ancient knowledge about how best to adorn a garden. That said Spanish bluebells tend to like southeast facing sun and can do well in dappled light. For the sweetest smelling flowers, a colony of shared Spanish bluebell rhizome should get a good six hours of sunlight per day. These are the perfect flowers to plant under deciduous fruit-bearing trees. Spanish bluebells start to bloom as early as March, and as such the fantastic flowers provide the necessary nectar for pollinators such as the honeybees and the bumblebees as these friends of the garden come out of Winter hibernation. The scintillatingly sugary smell of a colony of Spanish bluebells brings in the first butterflies of Spring, such as the cabbage butterfly (Pieris rapae), the painted lady butterfly (Vanessa cardui), and the peacock butterfly (Aglais io). Then, during late Spring and early Summer as prize pollinators become busy at the flowers of fruit trees, the Spanish bluebells pass on. The plant’s blue flowering stem and green sheath turn brown and go back to the earth. This Spring the Spanish bluebells first appeared in my garden literally quite out of the blue. The Spanish bluebells appeared as gifts of God and have been a sheer delight in building a gorgeous and functional garden. Spanish bluebells are prolific tillers of the garden soil. Their bulbs break through even clay soil and work as colonies to absorb and store water from rain as well as any melting snow. And just wait until the Spanish bluebells tap into the fruit tree rhizome. Thereby the plant’s bulbs help to oxygenate and hydrate an entire ecosystem. In my experience in a temperate pine and coniferous rainforest, Spanish bluebells need little to no watering before bursting forth with flowers in Spring. Perfect for working through heavy clay soils, I put my pay dirt on Spanish bluebells to till, hydrate, oxygenate, fertilize, and thereby create optimal garden soil. It’s a sadness when the violet blue waves of bells pass on in mid to late Spring. I pray that this perennial woodland beauty returns next year. Spanish bluebells as a cut flower makes wonderfully fragrant indoor bouquets. The offer is $50 for a 6 inch organic rooted bulb clump. Free shipping.
