The self-heal plant (Prunella vulgaris) is native to Europe, and naturalized across Asia and North America. Self-heal, also known as heart-of-the-earth, is a perennial, herbaceous wildflower, growing from between one to three feet tall. Make no mistake if you’re fortunate enough self-heal will take over patches of your garden. Gladly replace some of the lawn. Because while you have to hem and haw over lawn, mow it and cow tow to it, the self-heal plant does best gone wild, and left to its own devices. Typically, the flowers of self-heal appear violet, but they can also show up serendipitously pink and white. Once self-heal taps into your garden, all it needs is sunshine for all those vibrant, violet flowers, and some water during the driest days of summer. In turn, the self-heal plant will bring some vivacious visitors, such as sulphur butterflies, skippers, honeybees, and bumblebees. These native pollinators are priceless for food production. The self-heal plant is highly medicinal for healthy skin, wound healing, and for all-around immunological wellness. The leaves are made into salads and stews, the flowers brewed to make teas, tinctures, and other tonics, and the stems are used in salves, ointments, and poultices. The self-heal plant is at once antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant. It will help you heal from the inside out again.
