The great laurel (Rhododendron maximum) is native to Greece, parts of Europe, and the North American continent. The laurel is a holy flower in ancient Greek culture, symbolizing victory, honor, and glory. The hardiness zone of the great laurel is 3 to 8. In Greek the word “rhododendron” translates to “rose tree” and the ethereal beauty of this plant from the heath family will be there front and center as the fay awake in Spring. Depending upon where you live, the shrub will bud and then can bloom fully by late Spring. The blooms may last through mid-Summer, and a reblooming is possible if the evergreen shrub gets enough water and nutrients as well as just the right amount of sun. The great laurel prefers gentle sunlight and dappled shade, as well as moist, well-draining and slightly acidic soil. Thus does the great Creator offer your cottage garden a gift of flower power even in shady areas. The gorgeous flowers of the great laurel range in color from pink to purplish, depending upon the amount of sunlight, temperatures, soil acidity and water. The evergreen shrub can grow to a height of about 20 feet and at least half as wide. The honeybees and the bumble bees absolutely love this plant, and these pollinators will dine on the divine nectar as they create a symphony of Zen by early Summer. These garden fairies focus on the rhodie flowers and just appreciate that they visit your garden surrounding you with their heavenly humming. Don’t be surprised if a hummingbird also comes by to take a sip or two from the great laurel fairy fountain.
