Red Clover (Trifolium pratense) is native to the old-world Afro-Eurasian continent and the real “crimson clover” beloved by wild pollinators. The hellaciously hardy and holy herbaceous grass is naturalized across the globe. The red clover hardiness zone is 3 to 8. The wild grass can grow from half a foot to a few feet tall, and it makes an excellent garden groundcover. It can be pruned to any size at will. The plant does great as the round-a-bout rhizome that it is and will grow throughout dappled shade and sunny spots. Once established, you’ll only have to water the wild grass intermittently during dry seasons. Best yet one must never have to mow this gorgeous groundcover that displays translucent, light, burgundy-colored flowers. ‘Tis a far better idea to gather those very flowers for its well-known medicinal uses.
