Availability: 1 in stock

Nipplewort (Lapsana communis) is a perennial herbaceous plant that can be found in natural woodlands across Mother Earth. Given that this herb can be readily found around the globe it is sometimes called common:  it’s anything but. The nipplewort hardiness zone is 4 to 8. This golden flower is as pretty as it is resilient, but it grows best near trees and large shrubs in natural woodland areas. This magical plant of the bunny rabbits appeared in my woodland pine and coniferous garden a few years ago. Did you know that the genus of this plant (Lapsana) and bunny rabbit (Lapin) share similar roots? And bunnies do love eating this plant, especially the newest leaves of the youngest plants. Given the highest intelligences of bunnies, our pruning together in my garden only works to make harvesting even more plentiful. Bunnies are very wise and ancient and know just when, where, and how to prune. This lovely plant grows in colonies across my homestead, and I’ve directly observed how much Bunny likes eating it. Well, I do too. There’s always more than enough to go around. Indigenous women including mothers have used the dried flowers and leaves to make a tea that supports over-all health and lactation. The cheerful, social plant likes afternoon sun and thrives southeast or west facing with dappled shade. This wildflower may send out scouts even across the garden. However, the plant is masterful at creating shared spaces in a beautiful and balanced garden. Clusters of flowers bloom starting late Spring and can last all the way through Winter depending upon the climate, including precipitation, and how long it may go below freezing. Moist, well-draining soil is optimal all the year round. Yet, these delicate garden flower fairies tap into the root systems of the surrounding ecosystem and can thereby get through periods of drought. The flowers grow from about a foot to a few feet tall and spread as they’re want to do. This is a gentle and cordial beauty to invite into a garden, and it’s an honor should the flower choose to remain. Sometimes the plant may die back in Winter, but it will return in Spring and perennially if it likes your garden. If this plant decides to take root, it will do so. Butterflies and bees will visit to partake of this golden wildflower delicacy that also can provide a very practical, year-round nourishment. Although it’s those hidden beauties that get ignored, they’re also the ones that may reveal themselves to be surprisingly stunning. The offer is $35 for a 12 inch organic rooted seedling.
