Common hawthorn (Crataegus monogyna) is a deciduous tree native to Europe, and it is naturalized around the world including North America. The common hawthorn hardiness zone is 4a to 8b. The gorgeous flowers bloom in late spring, and the tree is pollinated by bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. Did you know that this illustrious plant even has its own butterfly? The hawthorn butterfly (Aporia crataegi) is found anywhere the fay fly, from the Americas to Europe to Asia to northwest Africa. Some say that the common hawthorn also known as the May Tree provides a gateway to the fairy realms. The flowers of the common hawthorn carry a lovely fragrance of vanilla and almond with a touch of spice. The tree is of the rose family and produces edible fruit that is made into jams, sauces, and syrups. It is a small, deciduous tree that grows up to about 30 feet tall. Common hawthorn requires 6 hours of direct sunlight for optimal growth, not to mention flower and fruit production. Watering should be done deeply and infrequently during the spring and the summer. Moreover, during winter the tree will thrive even with moderate precipitation, such that you can allow the tree to go dormant. At Portland Plant Paradise, we offer all shop customers a free consult, and we look forward to working with you such that your common hawthorn blooms and produces many fine flowers as well as berries for your fine jams, sauces, and syrups.
