Cherry laurel (Prunus laurocerasus) is native to southwestern Asia and southeastern Europe. It is widely naturalized across North America. The cherry laurel hardiness zone is 4 to 9. Prunus laurocerasus is a fast-growing evergreen that as such keeps its leaves year-round and is cultivated in gardens as a privacy shrub. Cherry laurel is a member of the rose family and produces beautiful, white, fragrant flowers in the spring that smell like almonds and maraschino cherries. The likes of which attracts honeybees, mason bees, and butterflies. Did you know that cherry laurel is a larval host plant to the lovely Eastern Tiger Swallowtail (Papilio glaucus)? Robins, waxwings, thrushes, finches, orioles, and the Northern Mockingbird may visit your garden to eat the shiny black berries that ripen during summer. For the rest of us two-legged, the berries are not edible. Cherry laurel can tolerate salty air, and as such can be planted in gardens near the ocean. The shrub which can grow up to 25 feet tall, and 30 feet wide can be pruned to almost any height and width. Cherry laurel does well in both full sun and partial shade. Cherry laurel does best in moist soil, but it can tolerate some drought especially when fully mature. Cherry laurel is a hermaphrodite and as such includes both male and female reproductive parts, yet it relies upon diverse pollinators to bring out its true splendor.
