The black hawthorn (Crataegus douglasii) is a deciduous tree native to the northern and western North American continent. The black hawthorn hardiness zone is 4a to 8b. The black hawthorn can grow up to about thirty feet tall and live for hundreds of years. The tree produces pungent flowers in late spring, and blue-purple-black berries in late summer. The black hawthorn’s flowers, which if you get close enough some say smell sweetish and others do say smell sour, are pollinated by bees and butterflies such as the gray hairstreak (Strymon melinus), the mourning cloak (Nymphalis antiopa), the western tiger swallowtail (Papilio rutulus), and the pale tiger swallowtail (Papilio eurymedon). The primary difference between the black hawthorn and the common hawthorn is that the former fruits blue-purple-black berries, whereas the latter fruits red berries. Also, the shapes of the leaves and of the trees themselves are somewhat different. The black hawthorn’s blue-purple-black berries are a favorite of the Gray Partridge, also known as the Hungarian Partridge, a gorgeous wild bird, and one of the two main species of partridges in North America. The Gray Partridge is considered endangered in parts of its range, according to birdful.org. Many of the two legged who aren’t birds also flock to the black hawthorn tree’s berries, which are commonly sold as jams, syrups, and tonics.
