Common knotgrass (Polygonum aviculare) grows like a native across Eurasia, the Americas, Australia, and New Zealand. The common knotgrass hardiness zone is 3 to 10. The indigenous of Mama Maya have long used knotgrass for healing and overall health, and for strengthening and balancing of the immunological system. The flowering grass can grow to six feet in length, as it spreads out horizontally across the ground. The indigenous prune this woodland herb to make tea out of it. Common knotgrass serves as a perfect ground cover under trees, and if there’s enough of it around on one’s property it will inevitably find a way to the light for some fantastic flowering. The plant may grow upward with the proper invitation, such as up a terrace or companion plant. The plant may also grow downward as in a rock garden. At the same time, common knotgrass will grow even in clay soil with deficient nutrients. In my garden, the knotgrass popped up in clay soil after I started watering those areas for my rosebushes. This wild grass grows well in southerly facing dappled sun. Once established, the grass may require water during dry seasons. The neighborhood honeybees, bumblebees, butterflies, moths, and hummingbirds will more likely visit a garden with flowering grass. In fact, common knotgrass feeds countless kinds of Lepidoptera butterflies and moths with its stems and leaves, not to mention its lovely white and pink flowers. This perennial woodland herb even has its own moth, which is a gorgeous white fairy called the knotgrass moth (Acronicta rumicis). Once common knotgrass establishes itself in a garden, it should return year-to-year although it may die back in Winter especially if the temperatures go below freezing. This offer is $35 for two 6 inch organic rooted common knotgrass seedlings. Free shipping. Portland Plant Paradise does not mail out to PO Boxes without explicit customer permission in writing.
