St. John’s Wort (Hypericum perforatum) is a perennial shrub that may grow several feet in height, although it can be pruned back and even grows great in containers. St. John’s Wort is native to Eurasia, and parts of North and Central Africa. It has been naturalized across much of North America. The hardiness zone for St. John’s Wort is 6a to 10. According to Wikipedia, “The genus name Hypericum is possibly derived from the Greek words hyper (above) and eikon (picture), in reference to the tradition of hanging the plant over religious icons in the home.” Some people call this priceless plant “devil’s scourge and Lord God’s wonder plant” and I personally use it in my arsenal against evil energies. The flowers, leaves, and berries are used for their many medicinal properties, such as alleviating depression. If you grow St. John’s Wort, you’ll see that each summer the fantastic golden flowers burst forth right around the time of the celebrations for St. John from late June through early July. If you have this holy plant in your garden, you’ll certainly see some vibrant visitors such as hummingbirds, butterflies, honeybees, and bumblebees. The red berries will feed a diversity of birds come fall and even into winter. The plant likes moist, well-draining soil and can survive even in partial shade. A good six hours of direct daily sunlight brings out the beautiful flowers and berries.
